Historical Roots in the Rhetoric of Erasure
New North Press did not begin in a technology incubator or a software lab. Its foundations were established in 2009 through academic research into the profound intersection of language, systemic architecture, and human truth.
Dr. Reece’s early work examined a critical tension within the legal system: instances where procedural mechanisms, designed to maintain strict courtroom neutrality, inadvertently restricted foundational vocabulary—such as "rape," "victim," and "assailant." In striving for structured impartiality, these procedural rules frequently required individuals to translate raw, traumatic experiences into highly formalized, abstract terminology.
The structural and psychological friction of this constraint was profound. By removing the precise narrative vocabulary required to communicate trauma, the system introduced a functional paradox: mandatory compliance with rigid, simplified templates could make an authentic human testimony appear fragmented or unconvincing to a jury. This research exposed a foundational insight for our mission:
When standardized, external frameworks oversimplify the boundaries of human expression, the integrity of individual truth is compromised.
Contextualizing the Trier of Fact and the Clinical Chart
In both the courtroom and the clinic, objective, statistically validated data is recognized as an indispensable standard of truth. Yet, data without its underlying context remains an incomplete map.
In the Courtroom: A trier of fact is limited in delivering comprehensive justice if objective data points—such as a forensic timeline—are structurally isolated from the nuanced, contextual realities of the event.
In the Clinic: A treatment plan compiled strictly from standardized measures can miss critical elements of patient care if it lacks a precise integration of the individual's cognitive, cultural, and sensory background.
When an administrative infrastructure prioritizes fitting a person's lived experiences into rigid variables at the expense of their authentic narrative, an epistemic gap occurs. In the rhetorical studies of Jean-François Lyotard, this structural conflict is conceptualized as the Differend — a dispute the existing language has no way to register.
A dispute cannot be comprehensively or equitably evaluated when the rules of a standardized framework inadvertently lack the specific vocabulary required to register the unique language and context of the individual.
The Technological Mirror (The Black-Box Challenge)
Today, the professional landscape faces a parallel architectural challenge, where the absolute ethical obligation of exhaustive, page-by-page record review is actively threatened by black-box automation and unverified data synthesis.
There is an increasing, critical caution among software architects and high-integrity practitioners regarding the industry's growing reliance on automated text summaries. Under the weight of staggering administrative demands, a troubling reality has emerged across the field: practitioners are increasingly incentivized to depend on automated tools that strip away primary context and lineage, creating an environment where the ethical necessity of reviewing every single page of the raw record is dangerously bypassed for speed.
When an infrastructure encourages a practitioner to rely on an abstracted machine summary without an explicit, verifiable citation tree, independent oversight is fundamentally compromised. Substituting algorithmic convenience for a rigorous, page-by-page evaluation introduces severe diagnostic and legal liabilities, as critical clinical nuances are easily obscured. When unverified machine outputs are blindly accepted as complete representations of a case file, true independent verification is effectively neutralized.
This dynamic replicates the mechanics of the Differend by utilizing the appearance of efficient, objective math to silence the vital human context buried within the unread pages of the record.
Our Solution is Sovereignty by Design
New North Press is building every tool toward the same end: preserving the complexity of human context rather than flattening it away. Whatever form a given tool takes, the mandate underneath it stays the same:
Human-in-the-Loop Integrity: Technology serves to sharpen human judgment, never to substitute for it. The responsibility for the record stays fully with the practitioner — always.
Absolute Transparency: Every conclusion has to be traceable back to its source. An expert witness or clinician should always be able to show their work, not just state a result and ask to be trusted.
Data Sovereignty: Clinician details, practice information, and sensitive client files are never used to train any model — ours or anyone else's. The data stays under the practitioner's own control, in full, at every stage.
You cannot automate human experience; you must intentionally engineer architectures that safeguard it.
The Differend does not close on its own. Someone has to build the bridge back to it — record by record, page by page.
